I’m BACK! In honor of DV month…

 Domestic violence and abuse

Our silence helps no one. I have many friends on FB, from all phases of my life. Childhood and high school friends, college friends, work friends going back 30+ years, sports parent friends, former students and parents, friends of friends…you name it.

Some know parts of my many stories and some do not. But silence helps no one.

Domestic violence affects everyone. No one is immune. Abuse happens to the best of us, and again, no one is immune. Abuse and domestic violence comes in many forms. The obvious ones leave bruises, but the mental and psychological ones can often leave much deeper scars. Abuse can look like financial control. Limiting access to funds, having to turn over your entire paycheck, only getting an allowance as an adult with a ft job. Abuse can look like isolation, keeping you so busy that you have no time for your friends or family. Or making it so difficult to see your friends or family that it’s just not worth it. Isolating you until you have no friends left, and limited contact with your family. Abuse can look like fear. Whether it’s fast reckless driving or actual fear of physical harm. Control through fear is never ok.

I was lucky in that we had no pets or children. I cannot imagine the extra layer of difficulty that would have added to trying to get away. The only thing I can say, is do whatever it takes…take yourself, your child, your pet and go. Find a safe place, with family, friends, a tiny one room apt…do whatever you must to break free and heal yourself.

Abuse and domestic violence is never ok. It’s been almost 30 years since I left my abuser, but some of my scars still remain. I am always available to listen, talk, support…
